The Sport For All Ages

THE GAME ...

Ringette is a winter team sport designed for people of all ages and it can be played on any outdoor or indoor rink used for hockey. Each team has six players on the ice at the same time. They are:

2 Forwards, 2 Defence, 1 Centre and 1 Goaltender.

A straight stick is used to pass, carry and shoot the round rubber ring and attempt to score goals. In Ringette, the emphasis is on fun, safety, participation and team play. It is a fast moving game, with rules designed for the safety of the participants (for example, intentional body contact is not allowed).

Players must wear hockey skates, a helmet with full-face ringette mask, ringette or hockey pants/girdle, and genital protection. Elbow and knee pads are mandatory, as are neck protection and shoulder pads.

Goaltenders must also wear goal pads and a chest protector.

THE RINK ...

The main rink markings are the two blue lines (hockey blue lines) and two extended red lines. The same type of net is used as in hockey, but there is a bigger crease.

THE PLAY ...

The rules stipulate that players cannot skate across either blue line while in possession of the ring. The player must pass the ring to a teammate across each blue line and may not touch it until it has been touched by another player.

There may be only three skaters from each team in the defensive zone at any one time. The Goaltender may not touch the ring beyond her/his own blue line and can only pick up the ring in her/his hand when it is in the crease.
